We all know that T1D can cause stress. All the work, the erratic blood sugars, the inconsiderate comments from people in your life are less than fun.
You can use this stress to your advantage!
Stress is the tension between how you want things to be and how they are right now. This state is not comfortable, but it can be helpful. It may seem counterintuitive, but life with T1D probably would be even more challenging if you didn’t feel any stress.
DON'T LET T1D HOLD YOU BACK!
The Ultimate Guide To Getting Unstuck With Type 1 Diabetes gives you strategies you can start using TODAY to insert flexibility into your life with T1D.
In this episode of The Diabetes Psychologist podcast, we look at T1D-related stress from a whole new angle. First, we’ll take a closer look at what stress is and what it is about T1D that causes stress. Then we’ll talk about three specific ways you can turn the stress of T1D on its head, and use it to your advantage. Here’s a preview:
Use stress as a signal
Stress is a signal, not just a feeling. When you experience stress, it’s telling you that something in your current environment isn’t quite right and needs to change. If you didn’t have stress with T1D, you might end up deep down a path without knowing you are in the wrong place. Seeing stress as a signal empowers you to make changes that can then reduce your stress.
Stress makes you normal
Many people think that experiencing stress with T1D makes them different. They think everyone else with T1D is having an easier time of it. Nothing could be further from the truth. Stress is a normal part of T1D. If you didn’t feel stress, your experience would not be typical at all. You live with a condition that requires constant attention, and stress comes with the territory.
Stress makes you a better version of yourself
Stress pushes you to grow. It shows you where you need to make changes to get better, and it also shows you that you are stronger than you think you are. Once you see you can handle the stress T1D throws your way, you’ll be able to deal with anything in your life. Knowing how resilient you are opens doors you never dreamed it was possible to walk through.
